Association between interhospital transfer and morbid obesity in emergency general surgery procedures
American Journal of Surgery Jul 09, 2020
Georgino MM, Murphy K, Paton BL, et al. - Assuming that obese patients may have unique surgical requirement, researchers here examined if an association exists between obesity and transfer in patients undergoing EGS. The NSQIP 2011–2016 database yielded data from 419,373 EGS patients; variation in transfer status was noted by obesity class. Per observations, super-obese EGS patients had higher odds of transfer from another hospital; did not have an increased preoperative length of stay; had the longest postoperative length of stay; were least likely to be discharged home from the hospital. After adjusting for other factors, obese patients were noted to be at higher risks of interhospital transfer, SSI, and have lower odds of discharge to home. Given the increasing prevalence of obese EGS patients, additional investigation determining best triage practices for this unique patient population is emphasized.
