Association between inflammatory response and outcome after subarachnoid haemorrhage
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Oct 02, 2020
Wenneberg SB, Hergès HO, Svedin P, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective observational pilot study to see if the inflammatory response following aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) has any impact on 1‐year outcome, as well as to ascertain if the inflammatory response after aSAH could anticipate development of delayed cerebral ischemia. The sample consisted of patients with an aSAH admitted to Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden between May 2015 and October 2016. Poor neurological outcome 1‐year after aSAH was correlated with elevated serum concentrations of inflammatory markers. Inflammatory markers, however, are affected by many clinical events, and only IL‐1Ra was significantly linked to the poor outcome when adjustments were made. In a larger trial, the robustness of these findings needs to be checked. Development of delayed cerebral ischemia was not predicted by inflammatory response after aSAH.
