Association between in vitro fertilization and ischemic placental disease by gestational age
Fertility and Sterility Jul 28, 2020
Johnson KM, Hacker MR, Thornton K, et al. - Via performing a secondary analysis of a retrospective cohort study of deliveries performed over 15 years at a single tertiary hospital, researchers investigated the correlation between in vitro fertilization (IVF) and ischemic placental disease (IPD), stratified by gestational age. During the study period, 69,084 deliveries were reported. Of these, 3,763 (5.4%) were conceived with IVF. In IVF pregnancies and non-IVF pregnancies, incidences of preterm delivery were 32.6% and 10.8%, respectively. Observations revealed strong correlation of IVF with preterm IPD. A similar, but attenuated, association was observed between IVF and term IPD. The stronger correlation with preterm IPD indicates a link between IVF and placental insufficiency.
