Association between hypertension and kidney function decline: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study
American Journal of Kidney Diseases May 02, 2019
Yu Z, et al. - In this observational study that included 14,854 subjects from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, researchers examined the link between hypertension, antihypertension medication use, and change in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) over time in subjects with preserved GFR. Using the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Clinical Practice Guideline, they classified baseline hypertension status (1987-1989). They assessed the link between baseline hypertension status and slope of estimated GFR by fitting mixed models with random intercepts and random slopes. Over a 30-year follow-up period, faster kidney function decline was observed in this general population cohort in relation to baseline hypertension status vs normotension. Among subjects on antihypertensive medications, this difference was attenuated.
