Association between hospital volume of cardiopulmonary resuscitation for in-hospital cardiac arrest and survival to hospital discharge
Resuscitation Jan 23, 2020
Akintoye E, et al. - Given the prior studies demonstrating no correlation of hospital case volume with survival in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), researchers here investigated the impact of case volume on survival for in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). Querying the National Inpatient Sample in the US 2005–2011, they recognized 125,082 cases (mean age 67, 45% female) of IHCA for which CPR was performed across more than 1,000 hospitals. Median [Q1, Q3] case volume of 60 [34, 99] was reported. Unlike OHCA, low CPR volume was an indicator of good performing hospitals in this analysis. No improved survival was observed for IHCA with increasing CPR case volume.
