Association between hospital market concentration and costs of laryngectomy
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Oct 22, 2019
Gourin CG, Vosler PS, Mandal R, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional analysis to explore the connection between regional hospital market concentration, hospital charges, and costs for laryngectomy. From January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2011, they used the Nationwide Inpatient Sample to identify 34,193 patients (mean age, 62.7 years [range, 20.0-96.0 years]) who had laryngectomy for a malignant laryngeal or hypopharyngeal neoplasm. Findings suggested an association of competition among hospitals with increased costs of care for laryngectomy. Lower costs of care were related to high-volume hospital care. Such data suggest that consolidating the hospital market and regionalizing laryngectomy in centers capable of meeting minimum volume thresholds may enhance the value of healthcare.
