Association between heart transplantation and subsequent risk of stroke among patients with heart failure

Merkler AE, et al. - Among patients with heart failure awaiting transplantation, researchers determined whether heart transplantation was correlated with a decreased risk of subsequent stroke by using administrative data from New York, California, and Florida between 2005 and 2015. Of the included 7,848 patients with heart failure awaiting heart transplantation, 1,068 underwent heart transplantation. According to results obtained from this retrospective cohort study, the annual incidence of stroke was 0.7% after heart transplantation vs 2.4% in those awaiting heart transplantation. Among patients with heart failure awaiting transplantation, heart transplantation was related to a decreased risk of stroke.
