Association between HbA1c and the development of cystic fibrosis-related diabetes
Diabetic Medicine Feb 03, 2019
Choudhury M, et al. - In people with cystic fibrosis (CF)-related diabetes, researchers analyzed HbA1c as a predictor of risk for future development of CF-related diabetes and evaluated the correlation with the development of retinopathy. This investigation was carried out in 50 adults with CF, comparing oral glucose tolerance test results with HbA1c values in anticipating the development of CF-related diabetes. The results of this 7-year retrospective longitudinal study indicated that severity of diabetic retinopathy was related to a higher HbA1c and longer duration of CF-related diabetes. A connection was found between HbA1c level and the future development of dysglycemia in CF based on oral glucose tolerance test and microvascular results. Although the current guidelines do not advocate the use of HbA1c as a diagnostic tool for CF-related diabetes, it can be of clinical use in identifying people at risk of future CF-related diabetes development.
