Association between Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and papillary thyroid carcinoma: A retrospective analysis of 305 patients
BMC Endocrine Disorders Jun 05, 2019
Graceffa G, et al. - In this retrospective analysis involving 305 patients, researchers explored the connection between Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Study participants were divided into two groups, with the first consisting of 142 patients who had a thyroidectomy (TT) for a TIR 5 preoperative fine-needle aspiration cytological diagnosis and the second consisting of 163 patients who had a TT for preoperative diagnosis of HT. A correlation with HT was found in 28.6% of the patients with final histopathological diagnosis of PTC vs 7.7% of the patients with histopathological diagnosis of multinodular goiter in the first group of patients, and this was a significant difference. A correlation with PTC was found in 43 cases of HT nodular variant and in 3 cases (8.1%) of HT diffuse variant in the second group of patients. The HT-PTC relationship is still far from clear and is an unresolved issue as these two are frequently seen together. According to findings, patients with a diagnosis of HT should be monitored carefully and should have frequent clinical and cytological evaluation of nodular lesions, especially those with nodular variant. Total thyroidectomy surgical approach should be considered under certain circumstances.
