Association between gout and dementia in the elderly: A nationwide population- based cohort study
The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Feb 03, 2021
Min KH, Kang SO, Oh SJ, et al. - In the elderly, researchers investigated the association between gout and risk of dementia via this retrospective cohort study. They used the National Health Insurance Service in Korea to obtain population-based representative claims data. Using the Elderly Cohort database, a total of 22,178 patients with gout and 113,590 without were identified and analyzed. The presence of dementia was found in 2,557 (11.53%) and 18,264 (16.08%) patients, respectively, in each group. Findings demonstrated an independent association of gout with a 37% lower risk of dementia in the elderly. Gout was independently linked with a significantly lower hazard ratio of incident dementia in multivariable analyses, with an adjusted hazard ratio of 0.63. Use of febuxostat significantly lowered incident dementia, as seen in sub-group analysis assessing the impacts of medication for gout.
