Association between glycemic control and cardiovascular events in older Japanese adults with diabetes mellitus: An analysis of the Japanese medical administrative database
Journal of Diabetes Investigation May 28, 2021
Yokote K, Suzuki R, Gouda M, et al. - Researchers utilized a Japanese administrative medical database to examine the link between HbA1c and cardiovascular events among older adults. A composite of cardiovascular events was the primary endpoint, and severe hypoglycemia and fracture were other endpoints. This study involved 3,946 older adults with diabetes mellitus; these were categorized based on HbA1c quartiles at the index date. The occurrence of cardiovascular events in 142 participants was noted. A higher risk for cardiovascular events was observed in participants with poor glycemic control vs those with better glycemic control, among older adults with diabetes mellitus. However, cardiovascular risk in patients with HbA1c < 7.2% was not influenced by strict glycemic control.
