Association between glaucoma and the risk of Alzheimer's disease: A systematic review of observational studies
Acta Ophthalmologica Apr 26, 2019
Xu XH, et al. - Researchers analyzed eight observational studies with 6,870 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients to determine if there is a link between glaucoma and the risk of AD. The included studies were identified from PubMed and Web of Science, were observational, and were published up to January 15, 2018. Using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale, most of these studies (n=6) were graded as low risk. An increased risk of AD was observed among those diagnosed with glaucoma vs those who were not. Study design could be a source of heterogeneity, as suggested by meta-regression analysis. Limiting the analyses to Asia revealed a significantly positive association. According to recent evidence, glaucoma may increase the risk of AD.
