Association between glaucoma and the risk of Alzheimer disease: A systematic review of observational studies
Acta Ophthalmologica Nov 10, 2019
Xu XH, et al. - Via analyzing eight observational studies with 6,870 Alzheimer disease (AD) patients, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between glaucoma and the risk of AD. The included studies were identified from PubMed and Web of Science, were observational, and were published up to January 15, 2018. Utilizing the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale, most of these studies (n = 6) were graded as low risk. An increased risk of AD was observed among those diagnosed with glaucoma vs those who were not. Study design could be a source of heterogeneity, as suggested by meta-regression analysis. Limiting the analyses to Asia revealed a significantly positive association. According to recent evidence, glaucoma may increase the risk of AD. In these analyses, there was no significant bias in publishing.
