Association between frequency of primary care provider visits and evidence-based statin prescribing and statin adherence: Findings from the Veterans Affairs System
American Heart Journal Mar 02, 2020
Ahmed ST, Mahtta D, Rehman H, et al. - In this study with patients suffering from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), researchers determined whether a higher use of evidence-based statin prescriptions and adherence would be seen in this patient population in relation to the frequency of visits with primary care providers (PCPs). They explored the Veterans Affairs Health Care System and found 1,249,061 patients with ASCVD (mean age = 71.9 years; 98.0% male) receiving care in 130 facilities and related community-based outpatient clinics. The participants were split into frequent PCP visitors (defined as annual PCP visits ≥ median number of PCP visits for the whole cohort) and infrequent PCP visitors (defined as annual PCP visits < median number of patient visits). In this study, a higher probability of any statin use, high intensity statin use, and statin adherence was observed in correlation with frequent visits with PCPs.
