Association between exposure to general vs regional anesthesia and risk of dementia in older adults
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Oct 12, 2020
Velkers C, Berger M, Gill SS, et al. - Researchers conducted this population‐based propensity matched retrospective cohort study to explore the connections between development of dementia and exposure to general anesthesia (GA) vs regional anesthesia (RA) administered for elective surgical procedures. In Ontario, Canada, all community‐dwelling people aged 66 and older who underwent one of five elective surgical procedures between April 1, 2007, and March 31, 2011 were included. Individuals with evidence of dementia before they entered the cohort were eliminated. The final analysis included 7,499 matched pairs. When compared with RA, elective surgery using GA was not related to an overall elevated risk of dementia. Future studies are needed to determine if, regardless of anesthetic technique, surgery is a risk factor for dementia.
