Association between estimated GFR and incident hypoglycemia during hospitalization
Nephrology Dec 02, 2021
Khanimov I, Zingerman B, Korzetz A, et al. - Findings demonstrate an association of decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with elevated risk of hypoglycemia in non-critically-ill patients hospitalized in internal medicine departments. Irrespective of diabetes mellitus (DM) status, glucose monitoring should be performed in all inpatients with CKD.
In this retrospective cohort study, 39,316 patients (mean age 68.0 ± 18.0 years, 49.3% males, 25.9% with DM, eGFR 69.5 ± 24.9 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ) discharged from internal medicine units between 2010 and 2013 were analyzed.
Occurrence of at least one hypoglycemic event was seen in 6.5% of participants.
An inverse relation of eGFR with incident hypoglycemia (OR 0.988) was revealed by logistic regression modelling, and outcomes were similar for patients with and without DM.
A negative correlation of estimated GFR with admission CRP levels was found for patients with and without DM.
There was a positive correlation between estimated GFR and admission serum albumin levels for both patients with and without DM.
