Association between erectile dysfunction and carotid subclinical atherosclerosis in HIV-infected patients
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Mar 01, 2019
Bernal E, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers investigated the value of the presence of moderate–severe erectile dysfunction (ED) as a marker for subclinical atherosclerosis (SCA) in HIV-infected patients. They determined the presence of ED using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire and the presence of SCA by calculating the mean carotid intima–media thickness with Doppler ultrasound in 139 men aged 45 years. Among these men, nearly 95% received antiretroviral therapy. Observations revealed the frequent reporting of moderate–severe ED in HIV-infected patients, especially in elderly and coinfected patients with hepatitis C virus. They identified a possible value of ED as an early clinical manifestation of developing atherosclerosis, and, therefore, recommend involving a deep control of cardiovascular risk factors and using a regimen with a better atherogenic profile in its presence.
