BMJ Open Aug 28, 2019
Gao X, Leng Y, Guo Y, et al. - Via a cross-sectional study conducted in Tangshan from 2013 to 2014, researchers examined the relationship between the Tangshan earthquake and depression following 37 years. Of the 5,024 individuals, 641 experienced the Tangshan earthquake, and 98 experienced bereavement because of the earthquake. thirty-seven years following the earthquake, survivors who had lost relatives during the earthquake were nearly threefold as prone to have depression as those who had not experienced the earthquake, while those who had not lost relatives were 1.69 times as apt. In women with or without bereavement and not in men, the earthquake was significantly correlated with depression and this relationship was also important in individuals over 18 years old at the time of the earthquake with or without bereavement, however, not in individuals less than 18 years old. Thus, 37 years following the Tangshan earthquake, earthquake experience was related to depression among bereaved survivors, women and individuals over 18 years old at the time of the earthquake.
