Association between early caffeine citrate administration and risk of acute kidney injury in preterm neonates: Results from the AWAKEN study
JAMA Pediatrics Apr 08, 2018
Harer MW, et al. - The connection between caffeine citrate administration and acute kidney injury (AKI) was evaluated in this study among preterm neonates born from January 1 to March 31, 2014, in the first 7 days after birth. Researchers also inspected the hypothesis that caffeine administration would be related to reduced incidence and severity of AKI. The occurrence of acute kidney injury appeared to be less frequent among neonates who received caffeine than among those who did not. The caffeine administration in preterm neonates correlated with reduced incidence and severity of AKI, which pointed out that for every 4.3 neonates exposed to caffeine, 1 case of AKI was prevented.
