Association between dietary melatonin intake and total and cause-specific mortality in Japanese adults in the Takayama Study
American Journal of Epidemiology Aug 18, 2021
Nagata C, Wada K, Yamakawa M, et al. - Dietary melatonin intake was significantly related to a reduced risk of total, cardiovascular, and non-cancer, non-cardiovascular mortality, thus demonstrating a potential benefit with regard to mortality rates.
A population-based cohort study in Japan.
Participants were 13,355 men and 15,724 women, aged 35 years and older.
A food-frequency questionnaire was employed.
Participants were observed during 16 years of follow-up.
Follow-up revealed 5,439 deaths.
For highest vs lowest melatonin quartile, hazard ratios were 0.90, 0.85 and 0.77 for total, cardiovascular, and non-cancer, non-cardiovascular mortality, respectively.
