Association between dietary acid load and the risk of hypertension among adults from South China: Result from Nutrition and Health Survey (2015–2017)

BMC Public Health Dec 08, 2019

Chen SW, Ji GY, Jiang Q, et al. - By performing a nutrition and health survey from 2015 to 2017 in Guangdong Province located in southern China, researchers inquired adults from this region to assess the link between dietary acid load (DAL) and the risk of hypertension among these individuals. Eligible people were 3,501 in total and 45.9% were male participants. Representative samples of citizens aged ≥ 18 years old were picked by using a four-stage probability sampling method. They evaluated DAL by potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP). Based on the quartile points of PRAL or NEAP distributions, they grouped participants into 4 groups (Q1-Q4). Hypertension rate was 30.7%. Findings are suggestive of a link between male hypertension and higher PRAL. Among the male, the estimated OR for Q2, Q3, and Q4 was 1.34, 1.53, and 1.51, respectively. This investigation was cross-sectional design and in order to confirm the link, further examinations are warranted.
