Association between critical care admissions and cognitive trajectories in older adults*
Critical Care Medicine Jul 18, 2019
Schulte PJ, et al. - Researchers examined older adults hospitalized in ICUs for their longitudinal cognitive trajectories. Using electronic medical records, they retrospectively ascertained prospectively collected cognitive scores of participants enrolled in the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging and ICU admissions. Among 3,673 participants, they identified 372 who had at least one ICU admission with median (25–75th percentile) follow-up of 2.5 years (1.2–4.4 yr) following first ICU admission. In older adults, a greater long-term cognitive decline was noted in correlation to ICU admission compared with patients without ICU admission. Patients developing delirium while in the ICU displayed the finding more pronouncedly.
