Association between congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction and mode of delivery at birth
Journal of AAPOS Sep 27, 2018
Tavakoli M, et al. - Authors gauged the relationship between delivery mode, occurrence of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO), and treatment results. They retrospectively analyzed the medical records of children diagnosed with CNLDO at a tertiary referral center between 2012 and 2017. Independent of gestational age, cesarean section (CS) is a risk factor for CNLDO. Moreover, a more complex clinical course demanding additional surgical interventions was seen in children born via CS. No significantly greater odds of CNLDO were seen for CS vs vaginal delivery (VD) births among preterm babies. In 50 patients, CNLDO did not resolve spontaneously, including 74% CS and 26% VD patients.
