Association between clinically meaningful posttraumatic stress disorder improvement and risk of type 2 diabetes
JAMA Aug 28, 2019
Scherrer JF, et al. - Researchers examined if a correlation exists between clinically meaningful posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; ≥ 20-point decrease on the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist score) symptom reduction and lower risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in this cohort study involving the medical records from 1,598 patients. Overall, they observed a 49% lower risk of incident T2D in correlation with clinically meaningful PTSD improvement vs less than clinically meaningful or no improvement. The researchers thus suggested reducing PTSD Checklist scores—whether through treatment or spontaneous improvement—in order to reduce the greater risk of T2D in patients with PTSD.
