Association between cigarette smoking and systemic lupus erythematosus: An updated multivariate Bayesian metaanalysis
The Journal of Rheumatology Oct 07, 2020
Chua MHY, Cheung MWL, Mak A, et al. - This updated metaanalysis was undertaken to assess the risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in correlation with cigarette smoking. Studies describing the association between cigarette smoking and SLE occurrence were selected by exploring computerized databases. Experts calculated the log-OR between current and never smokers, and between former and never smokers, to perform a Bayesian metaanalysis. Via multivariate metaregression, the impact of publication time, gender, and age of patients with SLE on the effect sizes was analyzed. A total of 12 eligible studies with 3,234 persons who developed SLE and 288,336 controls were examined. As per findings, an association between current smoking status and the risk of SLE was evident. The risk of SLE over time was not significantly impacted by gender and age of patients with SLE.
