Association between cigar or pipe smoking and cancer risk in men

Malhotra J et al. - Non-cigarette tobacco product use, such as cigars and pipes, is on the rise, despite exposure to similar carcinogens as in cigarettes.The current study showed that the risk for smoking-related cancers, particularly lung and head & neck cancers, is increased in men who smoke cigars and pipes.
Methods
- A meta-analyses of data from five prospective cohorts was conducted.
Results
- Cigars and/or pipe smokers are at increased risk for head and neck (HR = 1.51), lung (HR = 2.04), and liver cancers (HR = 1.56).
- Ever-smokers of cigars and/or pipe were at an increased risk of developing a smoking-related cancer when compared to never-smokers of any tobacco product (HR = 1.07).
- The risk for smoking-related cancers was also increased in mixed smokers who smoked cigars or pipe, as well as cigarettes.
