Association between childhood asthma and attention deficit hyperactivity or autism spectrum disorders: A systematic review with meta‐analysis
Clinical & Experimental Allergy Oct 05, 2020
Kaas TH, Vinding RK, Stokholm J, et al. - Researchers performed a systematic review with meta‐analysis of studies exploring the connection between asthma and attention deficit hyperreactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children. Using PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases, a comprehensive search was completed in March 2019. In total, 25 asthma‐ADHD studies were involved of which 17 displayed significant positive relationships and one a negative connection: 17/25 studies were population‐based, 19/25 were cross‐sectional or cohort studies and 7/25 had a low risk of bias. The data presented in this work showed a significant overlap between ADHD and asthma, but not between asthma and ASD in children. In order to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment of such comorbidity, physicians taking care of children with asthma or ADHD should be aware of such an affiliation.
