Association between caregiver depression and emergency department use among patients with dementia
JAMA Neurology Oct 26, 2019
Guterman EL, Allen IE, Josephson SA, et al. - In this longitudinal cohort study, researchers investigated the link between caregiver depression and increased utilization of the emergency department (ED) among patients with dementia via analyzing data from the Care Ecosystem study. This analysis included 663 caregiver-patient dyads. Patients were 45 years or older and had any type of dementia. At baseline, depression was detected in 84 caregivers. Among patients with dementia, a 73% rise in the rates of ED use was noted in relation to the presence of caregiver depression. Overall, caregiver depression seemed to be significantly related to heightened ED use among patients with dementia, showing a key caregiver vulnerability. Improved health outcomes and reduced expenses for this high-risk population could be achieved by addressing this caregiver vulnerability with patient- and caregiver-centered dementia care.
