Association between cardiorespiratory fitness and handgrip strength with age-related macular degeneration: A population-based study

British Journal of Ophthalmology Oct 13, 2020

Katsimpris A, Jürgens C, Lüdtke L, et al. - By examining cross-sectional data from the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (2008–2012), researchers investigated if two objective markers of physical fitness ie, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and handgrip strength were related to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Data were analyzed for 1,173 adult men and women aged 20–79 years. To evaluate CRF, experts analyzed peak oxygen uptake, oxygen uptake at the anaerobic threshold, and maximum power output from standardised cardiopulmonary exercise testing on a bicycle ergometer as per a modified Jones protocol. By using a handheld dynamometer, handgrip strength was evaluated. Findings revealed that CRF and handgrip strength were not related to AMD.
