Association between blood pressure and postoperative hematomas in the patients undergoing head and neck cancer reconstruction
Head & Neck Jun 13, 2019
Wang KY, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective chart review of enlisted 289 patients undergoing head and neck reconstructions for the risk factors associated with postoperative hematoma, one of the most common complications of free flap reconstruction. They noted postoperative hematomas in eighteen patients (6.2%); of these 12 hematomas occurred within the first 3 days and 9 in the first 24 hours. The risk of hematoma was higher in correlation to transient elevated blood pressure. Hence they recommend controlling systolic blood pressure below 150 mm Hg to prevent hematoma.
