Association between bicuspid aortic valve phenotype and patterns of valvular dysfunction: A meta-analysis
Clinical Cardiology Nov 08, 2021
Mai Z, Guan L, Mu Y, et al. - Findings corroborated an association between different bicuspid aortic valves (BAV) phenotypes and aortic valve dysfunction.
Cases of BAV are often complicated by valvular dysfunction.
This meta-analysis included 13 studies on BAV-RL (RL morphology) (n = 2,002) vs BAV-RN (RN morphology) (n = 1,254) and raphe (n = 4,001) vs without raphe (n = 673), to investigate the association between BAV morphology patterns and valve dysfunction.
A higher incidence of aortic regurgitation was reported in BAV-RL patients vs BAV-RN patients (odds ratio OR = 1.46).
BAV-RL patients exhibited a lower incidence of aortic stenosis vs BAV-RN patients (OR = 0.66); a higher incidence of aortic regurgitation was seen in BAV patients with raphe vs those without raphe (OR = 1.95).
The incidence of aortic stenosis did not differ between raphe and without raphe group (OR = 0.97).
The observed differences did not alter by mean age and gender.
