Association between benzodiazepine use and risks of chronic-onset poststroke pneumonia: A population-based cohort study
BMJ Open Jan 31, 2019
Lin SM, et al. - Using Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database, researchers studied the relationship between benzodiazepine (BZD) use and the risk of chronic-onset poststroke pneumonia. Of the 7,516 patients enrolled, 3,758 received BZDs after stroke while 3,758 did not. A full 1,027 patients in the BZD cohort and 478 patients in the non-BZD cohort developed pneumonia 1 month post-stroke during a mean follow-up period of 4.4 years. According to findings, BZD use was related to an increased risk of chronic-onset post-stroke pneumonia. Even after stratifying subgroups by age and sex, the significant link between the use of BZD and increased pneumonia risk persisted.
