Association between benign thyroid disease and breast cancer: A single center experience
BMC Endocrine Disorders Oct 23, 2019
Dobrinja C, Scomersi S, Giudici F, et al. – Via performing a retrospective cohort study involving 786 women and 7 men, researchers examined the possible coexistence of thyroid disease (TD) in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer (BC), and its association with BC clinical presentation with regard to menopausal status and disease stage. All study participants were treated for primary BC between 2014 and 2016. The investigators reviewed clinical charts and reports for coexisting thyroid disorders and menopausal status at the time of BC diagnosis. In 51 patients, thyroid autoimmunity was found. No connection with thyroid autoimmunity or altered thyroid function was found among BC molecular profiles. There was no statistically significant correlation between age and TD; however, TD was more prevalent among women aged ≥ 60 years. Patients with primary BC demonstrated a higher incidence of autoimmune disorders, particularly when diagnosed in the premenopausal setting. Nevertheless, in order to prove causality definitively, more prospective studies are needed.
