Association between Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccination and type 1 diabetes in adolescence: A population-based birth cohort study in Quebec, Canada
Preventive Medicine Dec 01, 2021
Corsenac P, Parent ME, Benedetti A, et al. - Considering that the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine could lower the incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) onset through immunomodulation, researchers herein examined how the early life Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination and age at vaccination are associated with type 1 diabetes incidence in adolescence.
A total of 387,704 individuals born in Quebec between 1970 and 1974, whose BCG vaccination status was determined from a provincial registry, were included in this cohort study.
A total of 178,133 (45.9%) individuals were identified to have received vaccination and there were 442 (0.11%) incident cases of type 1 diabetes.
Observations suggest no correlation of BCG vaccination/age at vaccination with T1D onset in adolescence.
