Association between atopic dermatitis and suicidality: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Dermatology Feb 20, 2019
Sandhu JK, et al. – In this study, researchers studied 310,681 patients with atopic dermatitis (AD; chronic inflammatory skin disease) and 4,460,086 control individuals to analyze the relationship between AD and suicidal tendency. Among patients with AD, they found a 44% greater likelihood of suicidal ideation and a 36% greater likelihood of suicide attempts vs control participants. Based on these findings, the investigators emphasized the importance of awareness of this risk among dermatology providers, and the need to screen for suicidality in patients with AD and make mental health referrals as appropriate.
