Association between area-level socioeconomic status, accessibility and diabetes-related hospitalisations: A cross-sectional analysis of data from Western Victoria, Australia
BMJ Open May 30, 2019
Sajjad MA, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to map diabetes hospitalization rates by local government area (LGA) across Western Victoria, Australia, and examine their correlation with socioeconomic status (SES) and accessibility/remoteness. Data were acquired for all hospitalizations (public and private) with a diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus in 2011–2014 from the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset. According to findings, higher accessibility at the LGA level and SES have been associated with higher hospitalization rates for type 1 and type 2 diabetes—overall and for each sex. These observations may be indicative of the search for self-motivated treatment and improved availability of specialist and hospital services in the study region's advantageous and accessible areas. However, the determinants are multifaceted for such variations in hospitalization rates and warrant further research.
