Association between appendicular skeletal muscle mass and depressive symptoms: Review of the cardiovascular and metabolic diseases etiology research center cohort
Journal of Affective Disorders May 20, 2018
Heo JE, et al. - In the middle-aged Korean population, researchers examined the relationship between skeletal muscle mass and depressive symptoms according to sex and menopausal status. They noted the predominance of depressive symptoms in men in lower and middle ASM/Ht2 tertiles [Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) measured via bioelectrical impedance analysis and adjusted for height squared]. In women, no association between ASM/Ht2 and depressive symptoms was recognized. Findings suggest that in middle-aged Korean men, the risk of depressive symptoms could be reduced via maintaining appropriate skeletal muscle mass.
