Association between age and weight as risk factors for complication after tonsillectomy in healthy children
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Mar 21, 2018
Lawlor CM, et al. - The relationship between posttonsillectomy complication rate and the age and weight of the child at the time of surgery was assessed by the authors. An increased risk for complication following tonsillectomy could be seen in the healthy children younger than 3 years. Within the first 24 hours after surgery, those children could also be at increased risk for complications compared to children 3 years or older. In these patients, the complications were not dependent on the weight. Subjects selected for overnight observation were related to an elevated number of adverse events after tonsillectomy, suggesting that it was important to have a clinician judgment for determining which patients were safe for outpatient tonsillectomy.
