Association between age and familial risk for alcoholism on functional connectivity in adolescence
Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Jun 04, 2019
Vaidya JG, et al. - Given that youth with a family history of alcohol use disorder (family history positive [FHP]) vs family history negative (FHN) peers exhibit higher risk of developing maladaptive substance use and that morphological variances and unique patterns of neural activation exist in FHP, researchers examined differential intrinsic functional connectivity among brain networks indexing premorbid risk of developing alcohol use disorder (AUD). In 191 adolescents 13 to 18 years of age with and without a family history of AUD, intrinsic functional connectivity was examined using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Outcomes revealed that FHP and FHN adolescents could be differentiated with intra-network connectivity, but not internetwork connectivity, differences in internetwork connectivity marked age differences within adolescence.
