Association between adherence to pharmacotherapy and outcomes in type 2 diabetes: A meta-analysis
Diabetes Care Aug 26, 2017
Khunti K et al. – The current meta–analysis study assessed an association between medication adherence and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), all–cause mortality, and hospitalization in patients with type 2 diabetes. Although no trials reporting on outcomes by adherence were identified, pooled analysis of observational studies indicate that good medication adherence is associated with reduced risk of all–cause mortality and hospitalization; bias may be a reason for these findings.
Methods
- Literature search was performed using electronic databases from inception to April 27, 2016.
Results
- A total of 8 observational studies (N = 318,125) were eligible for analysis.
- Mean rate of poor adherence was 37.8%.
- Relative risk of good versus poor medication adherence was 0.72 for all–cause mortality (I2 = 0%, 3 studies) and 0.90 for hospitalization (I2 = 63%, 7 studies), respectively.
