Association among placental 11β‐HSD2, PPAR‐γ, and NF‐κB p65 in small‐for‐gestational‐age infants: A nested case‐control study
American Journal of Reproductive Immunology Apr 17, 2020
Lin Fu, Bo QL, Gan Y, et al. - Active glucocorticoids are catalyzed into inactive products by 11β‐Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 (11β‐HSD2), preventing their passage into the fetus from maternal circulation. The expression of placental 11β‐HSD2 is regulated by peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor (PPAR)γ, a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily. Nuclear factor‐kappa B (NF‐κB), a transcription factor, regulates inflammatory signaling. Researchers here aimed at determined how 11β‐HSD2, PPAR‐γ, and NF‐κB p65 are associated in small‐for‐gestational‐age (SGA) infants. Enrollment of 46 SGA and 46 appropriate‐for‐gestational‐age infants was done. Per correlation analysis, there was positive association of neonatal weight with PPAR‐γ and 11β‐HSD2 in SGA placentas. In contrast, there was an inverse association of neonatal weight with NF‐κB p65 in SGA placentas. Positive correlation was observed between 11β‐HSD2 snd PPAR‐γ in SGA placentas. Findings suggest a possible involvement of inflammation‐associated downregulation of placental PPAR‐γ and 11β‐HSD2 in SGA.
