Associated factors of co‐existent pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer: A case‐control study
European Journal of Clinical Investigation Oct 19, 2020
Zheng L, Yin J, Wang S, et al. - This case‐control study was conducted to evaluate clinical factors correlated with the odds of co‐existent pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and lung cancer (PTB‐lung cancer). There were 125 PTB‐lung cancer patients enrolled by Beijing Chest Hospital between January 2012 and December 2016 to be the case group. The control groups were age‐ and sex‐matched PTB‐only (N=125) and lung cancer‐only (N=125) patients. They obtained data from medical records and CT reports. They found that distinct clinical symptoms and CT tests may help with the early diagnosis of PTB‐lung cancer cases. PTB‐lung cancer patients had significantly greater quantity of irritant cough, expectoration, hemoptysis, fever, and CT features of irregular mass and pleural thickening vs both controls of PTB‐only and lung cancer‐only patients. There may be a higher risk of lung cancer in PTB patients with fibrous calcification.
