Assessment of voice outcomes following surgery for thyroid cancer

JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Jul 24, 2019

Kovatch KJ, et al. - In this cross-sectional, population-based survey involving 2,325 patients (aged 17-89 years), researchers identified the prevalence, severity, and factors correlated with poor voice outcomes after surgery for differentiated thyroid cancer. To determine factors linked to abnormal voice, multivariable logistic regression and zero-inflated negative binomial analysis were performed. In 272 patients following thyroid cancer surgery, abnormal voice was observed. In multivariable analysis, age 45 to 54 years, black race, Asian race, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and lateral neck dissection were factors connected with an abnormal Voice Handicap Index (VHI-10) score. A high prevalence of abnormal voice per VHI-10 validation highlights the necessity for increased awareness of voice abnormalities after surgery and warrants discussion of risk-benefit, the planned extent of surgery, and post-operative rehabilitation.
