Assessment of prostate cancer treatment among Black and White patients during the COVID-19 pandemic
JAMA Jul 28, 2021
Bernstein AN, Talwar R, Handorf E, et al. - Researchers examined the correlation between race and prostate cancer (PCa) care delivery for Black and White patients during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. They conducted a multi-institutional cohort study of patients with untreated nonmetastatic prostate cancer during the initial COVID-19 lockdown. They identified only 1% of Black men who underwent prostatectomy, relative to 26% among White patients. Prior to the pandemic, the rate of prostatectomy did not differ between the 2 races (18% of Black men and 19% of White men). Per these findings, hospital restrictions were unbalanced during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Black patients experienced a disproportionate lower rate of prostatectomies.
