Assessment of persistent and prolonged postoperative opioid use among patients undergoing plastic and reconstructive surgery
JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Mar 15, 2019
Olds C, et al. - Researchers performed this population-based cohort study to assess immediate and long-term postoperative opioid use among 466,677 patients who underwent plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures. Observations revealed an increased risk of persistent opioid use among patients who filled opioid prescriptions perioperatively vs those who did not. Patients who underwent breast and abdominal procedures, as well as those with a history of mental health diagnoses, substance use, and chronic pain were most likely to succumb to persistent opioid use.
