Assessment of imaging modalities against liver biopsy in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: The amsterdam NAFLD‐NASH‐nash cohort
Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging May 28, 2021
Troelstra MA, Witjes JJ, van Dijk AM, et al. - A prospective cohort was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic performance of multiparametric MRI for the assessment of disease severity along with the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) disease spectrum with a comparison to histological scores. Researchers recruited a total of 37 individuals with NAFLD. In this study, Histological steatosis grades were compared to proton density fat fraction measured by magnetic resonance spectroscopy, magnitude‐based MRI, and three‐point Dixon, as well as FibroScan controlled attenuation parameter. They further compared FibroScan liver stiffness measurements with fibrosis levels. They ascertained the diagnostic performance of all imaging parameters for the distinction between simple steatosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Multiparametric MRI was found to be a promising technique for the noninvasive, accurate, and sensitive distinction between simple hepatic steatosis and NASH, as well as for the assessment of steatosis and fibrosis severity.
