Assessment of clinical and social characteristics that distinguish presbylaryngis from pathologic presbyphonia in elderly individuals

Crawley BK, et al. - Researchers ascertained as to what distinguished pathologic presbyphonia from presbylaryngis in Elderly individuals. The mean age of the patients involved was 83 years [range, 75-97 years]. Findings suggested the presence of presbylaryngis in most ambulatory people older than 74 years. Pathologic presbyphonia that has a negative effect on their voice and quality of life was endorsed by some. Seemingly an influence of respiratory capacity and sex on pathologic presbyphonia was reported. As per acoustic measures, both groups averaged lower than normal speaking fundamental frequency.
