Assessment of body composition in the advanced stage of castration-resistant prostate cancer: Special focus on sarcopenia

Prostate Cancer & Prostatic Diseases Nov 28, 2019

Stangl-Kremser J, Suarez-Ibarrola R, Andrea DD, et al. - In this single-center retrospective study of 186 consecutive individuals who underwent chemohormonal therapy between 2005 and 2016 as a first-line systemic treatment for castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), experts evaluated the predominance of sarcopenia and whether body composition parameters were related to disease progression and OS in individuals with CRPC. It was discovered that the large preponderance of men with CRPC suffers from sarcopenia. In this cohort, for the progression of the disease, an independent adverse predictor was low skeletal muscle volume. A statistically important body composition parameter for OS could not be identified, however, a trend for shorter OS was seen in individuals with a high proportion of visceral fat. Nonetheless, body composition parameters ascertained by CT data could give beneficial objective prognostic factors that could sustain altered treatment decision-making.
