Assessment of anastomotic biliary complications in adult patients undergoing high-acuity liver transplant
JAMA Surgery Feb 16, 2019
Kaldas FM, et al. - In this cohort study of adult recipients of 509 consecutive liver transplants, the incidence of anastomotic biliary complications in patients undergoing liver transplant was determined, and risk factors predispose patients to their occurrence were assessed. The recipients displayed anastomotic biliary complication rate of 20.2%. The 7 independent risk factors for complications were: recipient hepatic artery thrombosis, second liver transplant, recipient hepatic artery stenosis, donor hypertension, recipients with hepatocellular carcinoma, donor death due to anoxia, and use of nonabsorbable suture material for biliary reconstruction. Researchers recommend careful consideration of these factors in perioperative management and to mitigate potentially preventable anastomotic biliary complications.
