Assessing the value of preoperative medical clearance in patients with primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment
Clinical Ophthalmology Sep 11, 2019
Alabi RO, Turnbull ZA, Coombs PG, et al. - In patients undergoing surgery for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair at a single academic center, researchers identified rates of intraoperative and postoperative systemic and ocular adverse events and determined the value of preoperative medical evaluation. The study sample consisted of 185 patients undergoing surgery for repair of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) at a single academic center. According to this retrospective cohort study, nearly 48% of patients showed no interest in medical comorbidities. Patients undergoing RRD repair surgery had fewer medical comorbidities than reported previously in patients undergoing all vitreoretinal surgeries. In patients with chronic heart failure or who received general anesthesia, intraoperative and postoperative complications were uncommon and were increased. Findings suggested no significant association of complications with preoperative evaluation by an independent medical provider.
